clownfish - which anemone?

Postby Carrie on Wed Nov 28, 2007 8:35 pm

I owned saltwater aquarium before and had to sell it with all of the inhabitants included due to moving. I started a new tank and it's now about 4-5 months old.

I'm thinking of adding a pair of True Percula Clownfish. Which Anemone would be best for them?

Thanks!

Carrie-

Here is my advice:
Anemonies should be added only to an established tank. I would say wait another month or so before getting one. You wouldn't want to waste your money by having one now and then having an unhealthy, or even worst, dead anemone later on.

Also, make sure that your water quality is completely stable.

But here is a link that will help you match clown fish with their preferred anemonies for future reference:

Thank you for the advice and the link!

I'll wait for now. You're right. I wouldn't want a dead anemone and wasted $$$. :)

bugz - The bigger of the true pair of clowns is usually the female.

Check out this article regarding beginner fish. It has a little bit more information about clownfish.

Most of the time the female will get bigger and the male will be the smaller one.

I have been trying to determine for sure if I have True Percula Clowns or False Percula clowns. They where sold to me as being true percula but they are lighter colored with thin black borders around the white. From the discriptions that I have read of the two types thier seems to a gray area the is quite puzzling to me. Now aside from their coloring I understand that there is a difference in the number of spins in the dorsel fin. Now I have read several discriptions of this one giving the true Percula more spins while other discriptions do just the opposite. I have heard that both can have 10 spins as well. So I guess my question would be which is it. Do true percula's have more or do the false percula's? Also is there any other distinctions besided color and spin count? If possible can you give any good referances for this info? Thanks.

Patrick-
You can try these links:
http://www.wetwebmedia.com/clownfis.htm
and
http://www.wetwebmedia.com/clnselfaqs.htm

Then this link - True VS False Percula Clownfishes - How can you tell which is which?" page should be very helpful.

Thanks Zcarina, Yes I have been to those links. Here is some of the problems I'm having with the discriptions compared to the fishes.

In the one link they state that the false clown is more of a drab in coloring then the true percula. Yet I have see very brightly colored false clowns which had absolutely no black around the white. So I know they where false. Here is an article that I found where the guy seems to have a farely good grasp of what he is talking about. Not to say that he can't be wrong. http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/ ... laris.html It has been the first time that I have read about the differences in the face and eyes. With my two clowns however thier eyes are difference from each other. One looks like they have small beedy eyes while the other has alot of black around its eyes making them look bigger.

As his article seems to be just the opposite of about.com in that he states that the Percula has more spines in the dorsel fin. I have read this in an article from a Michigan University as well.
